Music Mastering

Your mix is sounding great — but is it ready for release? That’s where music mastering comes in. Mastering is the final stage of the music production process, where I carefully refine a finished mix so it feels balanced, clear, powerful, and consistent across real-world listening environments.

A good master should translate whether someone is listening on headphones, in the car, at home, through club speakers, on streaming platforms, or on vinyl. It is not just about making a song louder. It is about helping the track feel finished, emotionally connected, and competitive beside other professional releases without damaging the character of the mix.

At Moreish Studios, mastering engineer Shane Jarvie-Kohn offer high-fidelity music mastering in Melbourne for artists, producers, and engineers who care about the final details. Whether you are finishing a single, EP, or full album, I use a carefully chosen combination of high-end analogue and digital mastering tools to bring out the best in your music.

For mixes that need more depth, weight, and analogue character, I also offer Analogue Stem Mastering. This can be especially useful for digital or in-the-box mixes that need a little extra glue, warmth, dimension, or help taming harshness. My Neve-fronted analogue chain can add the kind of musical colour and charm heard on countless records, while still keeping your song clean, controlled, and release-ready. You can also check out my studio gear for more information.

I think of mastering as the final quality control stage before your music goes out into the world. As a mastering engineer, I listen for tonal balance, dynamics, low-end control, stereo image, loudness, sequencing, spacing, and any small issues that may have been missed during mixing. My goal is to make sure your music sounds its best everywhere it is played.

I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Every artist has a different sound, and every song has a different intention. Some tracks need to feel open and dynamic. Others need impact, density, and loudness. Some projects are built for streaming, while others need vinyl-ready masters or a cohesive sound across a full album. I shape the mastering process around the music, not the other way around.

I also want you to feel completely confident before committing to a full project. That is why I provide the first master as a sample, so you can hear the direction, understand the process, and make sure I am the right fit for your music.

Have questions or want to hear what mastering can do for your track? Get in touch. I am always happy to walk you through the process and help you get your music ready for release.

Preparing the track for mastering:

Our music mastering process is the same as most in the industry, if possible it’s best (but not required) to do the following:

◉ The highest quality stereo WAV or AIFF (Not MP3) of the bounced mix. We prefer to work with whatever the session was mixed in. Recommended Minimum: 24bit/48kHz OR no lower than 16bit/44.1kHz is preferred.
◉ -3db Headroom is preferred but so long as the track does not peak and hit above 0db we can work with it. A friendly reminder in most DAWs, the master fader is a POST-FADER fader unless set otherwise. Any peaks will not be removed by lowering the master fader and this needs to be done via the PRE-MASTER.
◉ Turn off any limiters. Less is more with any master bus processing. Please be mindful of your master bus compressors if used. We understand it can be a part of the mix style but leaving us room to work with our ears and dedicated equipment will always be recommended.
◉ Make sure ‘Normalise’ is turned off on export.
◉ We can provide ISRC codes for an additional fee. Please note: this is a dated system that is usually done by the streaming/online distributors nowadays automatically.

Optional: New to Mastering?

We offer a Pre-Master Guide for those who choose to be the most informed. It also contains detailed information on file requirements
and explanations for why we ask for what we ask. You might just learn a new trick or two.
